On the last full day of my recent week long trip to Ottawa, I felt like a relaxing day of doing not too much. I had been everywhere I wanted to go, seen what I wanted to see, and a pleasant afternoon reading in nice surroundings while being served a little food and drink seemed perfect. I settled on the Earl of Sussex Pub down on Sussex Drive and was well-rewarded in my choice… Read more

Alirang is a bit outside the concentration of eateries in the Byward Market section of Ottawa and is thus one of those places that the average diner will be unlikely to simply happen across. This is a bit of a shame really as the tiny Korean restaurant is a real little gem of a place and well-worth investigating… Read more

I had heard, or read somewhere, that the Royal Thai, which used to occupy other premises, is now in the same building as the Palais Imperial. When I checked it out, I assumed that the Palais Imperial (a Chinese restaurant) was on the lower floor, with Royal Thai upstairs, but, in fact, you can be seated on the lower floor and be given the menu for both establishments. This was a nice bonus, I thought since, in addition to allowing me to sample a couple of appetizers from the Royal Thai menu, I also able to enjoy an item or two of dim sum as well… Read more

Although I love Japanese cuisine, I can generally only manage sushi in very small doses as I find the sweet, vinegared rice very rich after just a few pieces. I wanted to give this place a try however, and, aside from a bit of linguistic confusion over the menu, I had a pretty decent meal… Read more

I have tried to visit Spiga on a couple of different trips to Ottawa but something has always intervened and made it impossible. Just recently, however, I managed to get there for lunch and I enjoyed the pleasant house wine and a couple of very interesting dishes… Read more

Whalesbone Sustainable Oyster & Fish Supply not only maintains a retail seafood outlet that supplies oysters and other maritime delicacies to restaurants around Ottawa, it also operates a very nice little restaurant (the ‘Oyster House’) downtown on Bank street. I visited there for dinner one evening a couple of years ago and, on my last trip to the city, I made a reservation for lunch. The current lunch menu, as opposed to the dinner menu, is a bit limited, consisting of two sorts of salad, fish and chips, chowder or a steamed mussels, but that didn’t matter to me as I was going for the oysters…

Brother’s Beer Bistro attracted me initially after I saw a grilled octopus entrée on their online-menu. When I visited the place recently, however, I was disappointed to discover that the offering had been discontinued a few weeks earlier and I almost went elsewhere. I didn’t, as it happened, and, though the meal I ended up having wasn’t exactly spectacular, by any means, I still enjoyed a pretty nice evening… Read more

Must Wine Bar is a tiny little establishment that is just a few doors down from Vineyards Wine Bar Bistro which I generally visit when in the capital. I have passed by the place many times, and even perused their posted many a few times, but it was only on my last trip south that I gave it a try. On the whole, I was very happy that I did… Read more

I was tempted to visit this place on a couple of past trips to Ottawa and finally got around to it on my most recent excursion to the capital. I really wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not, having perused their website a few times, but I actually had a very nice time and enjoyed a really pleasant meal… Read more
In my post back on March 9, I mentioned that I would be leaving in two days for a trip to Ottawa. It was a very pleasant trip, with lots of restaurants visited and interesting food purchases made, but my return, less than a few hours ago, was not quite as nice. My wife left for a business trip to the western Arctic a few days ago and sometime following her departure some dickhead broke in to our house…
Thankfully, there is very little damage, just a bit of mess from drawers and cupboards being searched, and only a few things taken. Our Blu-Ray player was stolen, as well as a bottle of wine and some cigars, but other than those things and some food, little else is missing as far as I can tell. The miscreant (and this has all the hallmarks of a single individual entry) tried to take our television (it was sitting in the hallway) and it is evident that he gave up the attempt as too much effort. Anyway, I have notified the police but I don’t imagine too much will come of it… Read more
