Checking in… – Sybaritica

Greetings All … I know I am supposed to be on blogging ‘hiatus’ at the moment but I couldn’t resist checking in with a brief update as to current events and a preview of a few things to come once I start my regular posts once again…
Anyway, part of my travels included a 12 day stay in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for a Law Conference and visits with family and friends. The above view is actually taken from a gun emplacement at the Halifax Citadel, which was the main installation for the City fortifications back before modern weaponry made such things a little pointless. If you look closely, you can see another, smaller, fortification on the little island out in the harbor.
The brick building at the right is the hotel where I stayed and. From this vantage point, I could totally have wiped the place off the map… If I’d had, you know…powder and cannonballs etc. Actually, come to think of it, this particular gun emplacement didn’t actually have cannon like some did but, still, you’ll agree that the people at the hotel had a pretty darn narrow escape anyway…

The ship pictured here is the HMCS Preserver, a Navy supply vessel. I am including the picture here because I sailed in her back nearly 40 years ago. Some readers may recall that her sister ship, the HMCS Protecteur (in which I also sailed), came to media attention a few months back when she caught fire in the Pacific and had to be towed to Hawaii by the American Navy.

My trip to Nova Scotia also involved a lot of dining experiences. As I mentioned when I announced my hiatus back in June, although most regular posts are currently suspended, I will still be posting restaurant reviews. I have 10 being edited at the moment and I will begin posting them in the next few days.

This summer, my wife expanded our summer ‘grow-op’ to two greenhouses. Things are coming all pretty well now that they have been in operation for a month and I will be featuring some of the produce in posts this fall. I have also been using my barbecue every chance I get, as well as the smoker my wife gave me at Christmas and I’ll be sharing my adventures with both those devices in due course…

Finally, I couldn’t close without mentioning the recent addition to our family. While I was absent, my wife acquired the two demonic little beasties pictured above… Cute they may be, but I am a mess of claw marks from being treated as some sort of mobile kitty playground. More anon …
